Galaxy View

The Galaxy View is the primary view of Our Galaxy.  It allows you to see the 3-D locations of objects in and around the Galaxy.

Positioning and Moving Around

In the Galaxy View, you choose to center on a specific object or point in space.  This object or point will  remain centered in the view as you zoom in and out or pan around.  It is the point you are directly looking at.

Where you are viewing from is called your location or point of view.  You can change your point of view by panning around with your finger or by using the mouse on macOS.

You can change your point of view’s distance from the centered object or point by using either the zoom in/out buttons at the bottom of the galaxy view, or by pinch zooming.  This will move you nearer to or further away from the centered point.

The distance from the centered point to your location  is displayed in the upper left of the view.  As you change your distance this will also change the field of view shown in the upper right.

Changing the Centered Object

There are three actions that can change the object or point you are centered over.  They are found in the Menu > Center sub-menu and are:

• Center On Galactic Core
• Center On Sun
• Center On Selected Object

Invoking one of these options will change the centered object as described.

Selecting Deep Sky Objects

Select objects in the Galaxy View by tapping on them.  The currently-selected object label is drawn in green.  When you select a new object, its basic properties are briefly displayed in the status area at the top of the view.  You can display more information about the selected object by tapping the Info button in the toolbar.

By long-pressing an object, you can display its label without making it the selected object.  This is useful if you are constructing a particular custom-saved view and want to label  only certain objects in the view.

Animations

The Galaxy View can be animated by double tapping (or double clicking) in the center portion of the left and right edges or the center portion of the top and bottom edges.  This will cause the view to animate in either  longitude or latitude.  Tap the view again to stop animation.
